About this tour

In the heart of Bulgaria lies a land veiled in myth and perfumed allure – the Rose Valley. Nestled between rolling hills and whispered legends, this enchanted realm reveals its secrets to those who dare to wander its fragrant pathways.

The Rose Valley is a renowned region famous for its production of roses and the world-famous rose oil. The Thracians played a significant role in shaping the cultural landscape of the region. Their advanced societies were known for their craftsmanship, goldsmithing, and unique religious beliefs. The Valley of the Thracian Kings, near Kazanlak, contains numerous tombs adorned with intricate frescoes depicting scenes from Thracian life and mythology.  The Valley’s fame stems from the cultivation of the Damask rose (Rosa damascena), which has been grown in the region for centuries. The unique climate, soil conditions, and expertise of local farmers have made this area ideal for rose cultivation. The rose fields typically bloom in late spring, usually in May and June, transforming the landscape into a sea of fragrant pink blossoms. The primary product derived from these roses is rose oil, also known as Bulgarian “attar of roses”. It is highly prized in the perfume and cosmetic industries for its exquisite scent and therapeutic properties. The production of rose oil involves a meticulous process of hand-picking the delicate petals early in the morning when their fragrance is the strongest, followed by a steam distillation process to extract the essential oil. The Rose Festival in Kazanlak, held annually in early June, celebrates this rich tradition of rose cultivation. From folk dancing procession to crowning of the Rose Queen, the festival is a true authentic experience.

The Tracian plain has a long history of winemaking, dating back thousands of years. Today, the plain remains one of Bulgaria’s most important wine-producing regions. The area is home to numerous vineyards and wineries. Grape varieties grown in the region include both indigenous Bulgarian varieties and international ones such as Mavrud, Rubin, Pamid, and Cherven Misket, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and others. Winemaking in the Thracian Plain encompasses both traditional and modern techniques to produce high-quality wines that reflect the region’s terroir. The wines of the Thracian Plain range from crisp, aromatic whites to robust, full-bodied reds, as well as rosés and sparkling wines.

So, raise your glass to the Rose Valley, where the beauty of the roses is matched only by the richness of the wine. Here, amidst the blooms and the vines, you’ll find a paradise for the senses, where every sip is a celebration of life, love, and the timeless magic of this enchanting land.
