The young Philip Sinapov embarked on a remarkable project: building Bulgaria’s first folklore house of its kind. Nestled in the enchanting Eastern Rhodopes, near Momchilgrad and Kardzhali, along the meandering Varbitsa River in the Sever’ villa settlement, this initiative aims to create a sanctuary for Bulgarian folklore and crafts. Folkore house “Garnatskine konatsi” invites everyone to join in reviving and preserving the traditions and customs that have shaped and sustained Bulgarian identity.
This interactive museum is unique in that everything within it is alive and functional, not merely part of the décor. Philip envisions every visitor becoming immersed in the vibrant Bulgarian revivalist lifestyle by engaging in traditional crafts such as weaving, tailoring, and wool processing. The house also features a music school offering various disciplines, adding another layer to the cultural experience.
Visitors can explore the chambers, connect with the land, and experience life as it once was. They can don traditional Rhodope attire, work with natural resources, and step back in time. For the younger generation, year-round camps provide an opportunity to learn about everyday traditions and their connection to the natural world.
Participants can knead dough in wooden troughs and bake it in an old-fashioned oven, pick fragrant herbs from the garden, and prepare dishes like banitsa, Rhodope klin, and patatnik. They’ll also engage in farming tasks such as planting, watering, and caring for crops and fruit trees, eventually enjoying their harvest in the fall.
Through this living museum, Philip hopes to nurture a deeper appreciation for Bulgaria’s cultural heritage and inspire a new generation to carry these traditions forward.
